GCT Warsaw Blitz Day 1: Firouzja Surges With 6½/9 as Niemann's Unbeaten Run Ends

By ChessGrandMonkey5 min read

The blitz has blown the Grand Chess Tour Super Rapid & Blitz Poland wide open. Alireza Firouzja, who was second-to-last after the rapid, scored a stunning 6½/9 on blitz Day 1 to vault up the combined standings. Fabiano Caruana matched him blow for blow with 6/9. And Hans Niemann, who entered the blitz with a comfortable lead after his unbeaten rapid, lost five games in a single day.

Niemann still leads the combined standings, but only by half a point. The final nine blitz rounds on May 9 will decide everything.

Blitz Day 1 Highlights

Firouzja's Revenge Tour

Firouzja opened the blitz by beating Niemann in 92 moves, immediately signaling that the rapid form chart was irrelevant. He followed that with wins over Gukesh (R2), Wojtaszek (R4), So (R7), and MVL (R9), losing only once - to Caruana in Round 8.

After struggling through the rapid with just 1 win in 9 games, the Frenchman looked like a completely different player at the faster time control. His 6½/9 was the best individual score of the entire tournament across any single day.

Caruana's Clinical Day

Caruana scored 6/9, winning six games while losing only to Niemann (R4) and Wojtaszek (R7). His victims included Sindarov, MVL, Gukesh, Duda, and critically Firouzja in Round 8 - the only person to beat the blitz leader all day.

After a middling rapid section where he scored just 9 points, Caruana is now tied for third in the combined standings. His blitz rating of 2749 is clearly underselling his ability.

Niemann's Rough Transition

The rapid king had a brutal blitz day. Niemann lost to Firouzja (R1), So (R3), Gukesh (R7), Duda (R8), and Wojtaszek (R9) - five losses in nine games. His three wins (Fedoseev R2, Caruana R4, MVL R5) showed flashes of quality, but the losses were costly.

His rapid cushion of 13 points is keeping him afloat at the top, but 3½/9 in blitz is the kind of score that loses tournaments. He leads So by just half a point heading into the final day.

Sindarov Evens the WCC Score

In Round 8, Sindarov beat Gukesh with the White pieces - evening their head-to-head at 1-1 in Warsaw. After Gukesh's fist-pump win in the rapid, Sindarov's blitz victory provides a measure of psychological balance heading toward the World Championship later this year.

The Race for the Final Day

Nine more blitz rounds on May 9 will decide the tournament. Here's what's at stake:

Niemann (16½) leads but is vulnerable. If he has another 3½/9 day while Caruana or Firouzja repeat their Day 1 form, they'll overtake him. He needs at least 5/9 to feel comfortable.

So (16) is the most likely winner if Niemann stumbles. Half a point back, the Filipino-American needs only a slightly better blitz day than his rival.

Caruana (15) is the form player in blitz and has the momentum. Another 6/9 day would put him at 21, likely enough to win. But he needs Niemann and So to both falter.

Firouzja (12½) would need something close to a perfect score to win outright - but he's already shown he's capable of extraordinary blitz performances. He's the dark horse.
