Gukesh Steps Back from Grand Chess Tour to Prepare for World Championship Defense
World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju has withdrawn from the full Grand Chess Tour 2026, skipping all classical events to focus on his World Championship defense against Sindarov. He'll only play two rapid events as a wildcard, starting with Super Rapid & Blitz Poland in Warsaw on May 3-10, where he'll face his challenger for the first time.

The Chess.com Open 2026 delivered two of the year's biggest upsets on Day 1. Daniil Dubov swept Candidates winner Sindarov 3-0, then 15-year-old Sina Movahed blanked world No. 5 Erigaisi 3-0. Both were eliminated hours later in the losers bracket. Carlsen cruised to the upper bracket semifinals.
